Grace's Star Helper Outline

This is an excellent example of what I am looking for when your child is the star helper the second time.  Be creative, dont feel like you have to fill all the space, use various materials, work together to help your child.  I will send them home eventually for you to keep.  Your child will get their tracing on Friday before their week so you have all weekend to work on it.

Reading

In reading we are into Unit 8, which focuses on plants.  The letters/sounds and fluency words for unit 8 are; K, /ck/, U, little said, here, was.  We look at the word families _ot, _op, _ick. This is a unit test taken individually.  We are focusing on the big concepts of how seeds travel and how seeds grow.

Unit 9 will begin around mid April it focuses on Amazing creatures.  We spend a week each on bugs, the ocean & dinosaurs.  The letters/sounds and fluency words are; G, W, V, X, she, he, has, look.

Fluency Words

I have been writing the fluency words that your child still needs to practice in their planners each week.  We will begin to take “spelling tests” each week where they will now need to spell and write the words that they can read.

Homework

We will soon be finishing up letters for homework and I will be sending home blends to work on.  Your child will need to come up with at least 6 words with the blend.  I encourage them to find any pictures with the blend words or draw, color, and label what they find.  If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Math

We are working in topic 9 in math, which explored numbers 11-15.  We counted, recognized and wrote those numbers.  We practiced adding on from a number given as well as counting backwards. We have spent a lot of time making sure numbers go the right direction when they are written and the numbers are not transposed.

We will soon be working on topic 10, which is about measurement.  We will explore measurement in terms of height, length, weight, volume, area, etc.  Topic 11 explores numbers to 20.

Science

We have been studying wood for a few weeks.  We have five kinds of wood that we look at and explore the properties of (redwood, basswood, pine, plywood & particle board).  We have put water on them to see how they change and also put them in water to discover if they float or sink.  The last activity we did the children figured out and graphed how many paper clips it took to sink each type of wood.  We then talked about why it would be different for each kind of wood.  We explored the term density in relation to the different kinds of wood.  We will soon be working on changing the properties of wood by sanding, nailing, cutting, etc.  There is a district assessment at the end of the unit where students are expected to name at least 4 kinds of wood and the properties.

We are also planting and exploring seeds since we are currently working with that in our reading series.  They are trying to grow a bean in a bag in the window and grass with dirt.  We are observing and documenting the changes we see.

Report Cards

Report cards will be going home on the 9th of April.  With the report card will send home a note about spring conferences.  I will meet with you if you choose before the end of the year.  This is completely voluntary and on my own time but I am glad to meet with anyone who feels the need before your child goes to first grade.  I have work samples I can share as well as things to do over the summer as well as address any concerns or questions you might have.

IMAX TRIP

Kindergarten is going to the IMAX on the 14th of April to see the Climate Change exhibit, which will explain aspects of weather, and weather changes, which will help to reinforce our unit 7 reading information.  Then we will have a picnic lunch at the park nearby (weather permitting) before watching the IMAX film Under the Sea 3D.  Our trip is mostly paid for with Great Minds grant money and regional funds are helping cover some of our bus expense.  Unfortunately no parents on this trip due to tickets and cost but keep your calendars open for our second Vanderveer trip on May 14.

Generations Day (Grandparents Day)

We have Generations Day coming up on April 29th.  Grandparents can come from 9:00-10:00 (I suggest to get here early due to parking!).  They can attend the book fair, get a tour, see the classroom and spend and hour with their grandchild.
